A Geologist's Life in the 'Tristes Tropiques' / Ewoud Bon
In 1960 a Dutch tin-mining company called Billiton became aware that in a remote western part of the Brazilian Amazon tin-ore was found. Two years later they started operating a small mechanised tin mine, applying their know-how from Indonesia.
In 1963, as a young geologist looking for a job, I was assigned to this project. Until 1969 I worked for Billiton in Brazil, living with wife and young daughter through all the ups and downs of the enterprise. The notes that I took during that period constitute this book. They relate daily happenings, personal and professional impressions, published as they were written down without corrections. Photographs, sketches and maps were added later. The qualification ‘Tristes Tropiques’ of the region where the events took place reflects the remorse that I felt about the privations and sufferings that were the lot of my wife during our life in Rondônia.
